How A Cancer Social Network Can Benefit You

By Mamie Conrad

Whenever people hear about the condition cancer, they usually think of something that can possibly lead to death. Indeed, the disease is life threatening especially when diagnosed in the latter stages. To provide more support for those affected, whether the patients themselves or their families, joining a reliable cancer social network would be great.

The possibility of cancer advancing to higher stages will depend on how early it was diagnosed. The metastasis or the spreading of cancerous cells can be very wide that different systems may be affected already. Cancerous cells suck out all the nutrients for normal cells. That is why patients lose a lot of weight from the process.

The loss of weight and the different changes in the body that patients have can render them alienated from the rest of the society. If they undergo chemotherapy to somehow attempt to kills the abnormal cells, they will also suffer from numerous self esteem issues. Alopecia or loss of hair normally occurs during chemotherapy and is a major reason for patients, especially girls, to hide themselves away.

Although it may be considered normal for the patients to feel this way, it should be emphasized that it is not the end of the world for them. They should still continue to live their lives normally and this means giving them all the support that they need. That is why various social networks have been developed for those with the diagnosis and their families as well.

Even doctors can join the networks to express their support for those who are fighting the disease and those who are on remission already. Members will also be able to meet people who are like them. Because they will get the sympathy and the care that those without the condition may not be able to give them, life would be much worthwhile.

With social networking, cancer patients will also be given the chance to express themselves better. They can write blogs about what they are going through. Those who have survived can inspire those who are still struggling through their own personal stories. Hope, which is a very vital thing for patients to have, can be found in these sites.

It is also possible for members to join forums so they can discuss common topics regarding their condition. They can also join conferences as well as group and individual chats to hone their relationships with the other members. This is one type of support they can get from social networking aside from the advice they listen to from their doctors.

Indeed, there are several perks that members can enjoy from the said networks. Nevertheless, they need to examine closely the networks they intend to join in. It should have features that will prove to be very helpful to them. Otherwise, it will just be considered a waste of their time. The members they deal with should all be constructive to avoid feeling down.

A cancer social network is a cyber place where all those who have cancer or are families of people who have the same diagnosis can go to. It is important for these people to know that support can be available to them 24 hours a day. They just need to take time looking around the internet to join the right organization.
