Things To Consider About Pro Tools Certification Los Angeles

By Kerri Turner

A lot of people who are drawn to the production side of the music industry obtain their skills through practice, guidance from someone they know and self study in between. Many of these people become great at what they do, but without getting your Pro Tools Certification Los Angeles studios may be reluctant to hire you. Many of the high end commercial studios in particular want to see some proof that you are competent in using the program.

Getting certified will give you the necessary theoretical knowledge that self taught producers may take much longer to gain. Likewise, self taught producers have a unique sense of skill and practical application that cannot necessarily be taught. This is why both approaches work, but a combination of the two will really enhance your skill level and overall competency.

It is definitely possible to get much of the theoretical knowledge on your own without enrolling in a course, but sometimes it can be challenging to learn the right theory in the right way at the right time if you are just browsing whatever resources you can find. Participating in a structured course will ensure that you start with the basics and work your way up to a comprehensive understanding that will speed up the learning process. Having the theoretical background will be beneficial later on as you develop hand on skills and need to make decisions based on the theory behind how the program actually works.

During a certification course, one will often realize that there are more functions and features than you may have realized. It will help you to quickly identify the best way to do things and to provide different ways of getting the same or a similar effect, without getting stuck using the same method continuously.

Employment is obviously one of the main benefits. As much as a good reputation can get you into some of the best studios, many top studios these days require some form of certification before they even speak to you.

It is really a matter of thinking about what skill set you have and what a certificate would mean for you. If you already have sought after contacts and great experience you might be able to find your dream job already, but if you are a beginner with very little experience, having a piece of paper saying what you can do might help you to get recognized more easily.

It is a good idea to try and get some real world experience either way, even if it is just by observing a seasoned producer in studio or trying to build up contacts in the industry. This will prevent the common feeling of incompetence by people who complete their certification but have none of the skills that can only come with experience.

Another factor that may cause people to doubt whether it is a good idea to get certified training is the cost. The training can be pricey but if you are serious about being a producer as your career is may be well worth your while. On the other hand, it may not be necessary for someone who is looking to do some basic recording and mastering at home as a hobby. Either way, it will take dedication and hard work to truly master the art of music production.
