The Top Performers Round Out The Pittsburgh Ballet

By Patrice McCoy

You may or may not be familiar with the standards of the Pittsburgh Ballet. They are literally considered to be one of the better companies as they demand the best. The obvious commitment to ensuring that the dancers are well trained and among some of the top performers comes through during each performance.

As a discipline, dance is extremely precise and difficult to master. The quality of one's training is imperative. If you are one who has spent a lifetime honing each skill to perfection, you still want to strive for more. This is a world renowned company with dancers that are brought over from Europe and other countries to ensure that there is always a line up that cannot be beaten.

The professional who wants to be part of a company like this must be willing to extend themselves to a new level of achievement. No professional is at the top of their game without continuous stretching of their perceived limitations. When one can go beyond the typical point of excellence they can go beyond what even they themselves expect.

By learning how to look at the top achievements as milestones, rather than destinations, dancers can ultimately create standards of performance that go beyond what many think of as the best. This is the difference between those who dance for a couple of years and those who make a lifelong career out of it. A consistent desire to be the best is the driving force you want to connect with.

The combination of art and sport make dance an exceptionally difficult skill to consider it mastered. The constant pushing to new heights can take a toll on the body if self care is lacking or if there is a problem with the basic fundamentals learned in the early dance lessons. Relearning fundamentals in a more naturally body appropriate manner is a tall order, and one that is usually not conducive to a professional career.

It is only when the dancer does not take the time for good practices and self care, or have learned techniques which are not in conjunction with the natural flow of the body, do long term physical problems begin to develop. In most cases, there is a fundamental problem with the technique that was learned as a child. This can be a relatively common problem. In many cases, relearning basics will save the body but it may not inspire a career, as this is a very difficult task to take on.

Just like any other type of profession, there is always a first job. Get familiar with the company before auditioning. Know the extent that the dancers push themselves and be ready to extend your own level of accomplishment. Reaching for higher goals all the time is how excellence is truly achieved. Avoid auditioning too early.

It is a wonderful honor and considered a great achievement to join the Pittsburgh Ballet. This highly competitive company is also known for treating the dancers well. They expect you to rise above it all, but in the end they also provide well for you. Your performance quality will delight you when you start to strive for greater achievements than you ever thought possible. This is the heart and soul of the principles that make up the company.
