Tips On Being An Awesome Event Photographer

By Ping Valentine

Event photography as a profession is very financially rewarding. People who cover events like marriages, conferences, sports events, award ceremonies etc. are known as event photographers.

It is widely believed that event photography is a straightforward job, wherein all a person has to do is show up at the event and keep clicking photographs every now and then. However, this is not right at all. To become a professional event photographer one must create certain talents required by the discipline, which can be obtained and improved by taking up specialised courses on the subject.

From the outside you may think that as the photographer runs around just snapping that there is no method in their photography. At an event there is an objective in place that must be met. Getting a large spread of great top quality pictures requires skill and a great eye. Being quick off the mark is a must to seize all those unexpected shots.

The first skill that an event photographer must have is imagination and it must be coupled with the capability to comprehend the mood of an event. For instance, the method needed to do a wedding project is not the same as that of a sports event. Thus, the photographer must have the quality of creatively capturing the mood of an occasion through his images.

Remember at an event you are there to take the shots and not actually be part of the photos. By that what is meant is that you should be able to do your work without upsetting the flow of the event. No one really should know you are there. When people do not think you are there, not only do you gain the best candid real shots you also do not disturb the event.

Event photography also requires appropriate handling of many issues that a photographer might have to confront during the event. Carelessness and indifference won't make you successful in this profession. The photographer should always be ready with all his gear before the event starts. A habit of lazing around or doing things in a hurry will not take you anywhere in this job.

An event photographer should be technically sound and qualified for the job. Knowledge about the technical features of photography equipment affects the outcome. The use of illumination and different angles is critical in any form of photography and a photographer should know how to utilize them in various situations.

Offering an event photography service also implies that you are in business. You're no longer an amateur snapping a few photographs for friends you are a professional. Because you are in business you will need to better your non-photography skills such as your people and communication skills. Take the time to do communication and people management training courses because they will pay dividens for you particularly if this is a weak spot for you. If your communication skills are low your business growth will be slow. Being able to be effective with people is a No1 skill in this industry and field of photography. Books like 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' are also a must to read. Grow your personal communication skills today and watch your business grow tomorrow.

In a nutshell, event photography requires the practitioner's devotion along with his interest for grasping different aspects of the profession. To make sure that you do well in this profession, the qualities of being always aware and flexible in your approach are critical.
