Shutterbug's Essential Guide To Better Photography Skills

By Brett Finn Sanchez

Photography can be a very rewarding activity. You may be lost, however, due to an oversaturation of information. This article will provide you with some proven techniques that can help you take better photos.

There are plenty of interesting things all around you to take photographs of. Experiment! Just grab that camera and have a little fun!

Shoot photos of a wide range of individuals. Always ask for their permission. Pictures like these help you to find more vivid memories when you look back, even if at the time the people seemed unremarkable. Candid shots of people wearing normal, casual clothes work really well.

Optical zoom is what you should focus with instead of the digital zoom option. Many cameras will let you zoom up really far, but the quality will be compromised if you switch from using optical to digital zoom modes. Digital zoom uses an algorithm to add pixels which hurts the quality of the image. Read through your camera's instruction manual to determine whether or not you can disable digital zoom.

When you are traveling, take small snapshots of intricate details. While you might normally skip over these types of shots, you should consider whether or not you'd enjoy seeing it again when you are revisiting the photographs from your trip. Consider snapping pictures of things like a street sign, an interesting landmark or a ticket to a movie or the theater.

If the sky looks overcast, minimize its appearance in your picture. Having too much gray sky can make your shots appear washed-out and muted. Black and white photos can work better if shot on overcast days. Blue skies look magnificent in photographs; however, you will still need to take light into consideration.

When you're working in low light conditions, you must make sure you decrease the f/stop setting, which is the same as the aperture. This increases the diameter of the aperture, so it can draw in the maximum amount of light when the shot is taken.

When you have just started photography, you have to know about white balance, or the color of pure light in your shots. Every kind of lighting creates some kind of color, and to find the right look for your photos, you have to be certain to use proper lighting.

In many pictures, people will be looking directly into the camera. Have the subject of your photo focus their eyes on a distant object, rather than the camera. You can also achieve a distinctive look by asking the subject to focus on a person or object within the frame.

At this point, you should be well informed about how to become a better photographer. Return to this list as needed to brush up on the techniques discussed. If you stay dedicated, you photos will become art.
