Photography: Learn To Take Masterful Photos Without Training

By Dorsey T. Emanus

Photography is a special hobby in that not only can you enjoy it for its sake by taking pictures of scenery, but you can also make a profession of it. Many people want pictures to preserve memories. This article will offer tips to bring your photography up to par.

Natural lighting is an important element of taking good pictures. In order to get the lighting just right, you may need to bring in additional sources such as your camera flash or stand alone lights. Once the lighting is right, you can move your subjects around to get just the right picture without worrying about having too much or too little light.

Put a polarizing filter on your lens. Using a polarizing filter will help to soften the photos. If you don't have a polarizing filter, hold up a pair of sunglasses in front of the lens. Put the glasses as close to the lens as possible so you don't end up getting the rim of the glasses in your picture.

In photography, make sure that your main focus is on the quality and not the quantity of pictures. It's always better for you to get ten great shots than one hundred average shots in a day. Quality is always the better choice.

Consider your photo angles before you shoot. Look through your cameras view finder to see how the background and foreground interact. Check for odd shapes, or things that will detract from what you were thinking when you decided to take the shot. Taking a second to compose your thoughts will improve your pictures.

Photography is unique in that you can get very good at it via self teaching. It's not necessary to attend classes or read instruction books. You can learn by trial and error. That being said, taking classes and reading will greatly speed your learning curve.

When you are taking pictures of people outside, you want to do it during the day time. To be more specific, you want to take these pictures when the sun is low in the sky. Early mornings and late afternoons are best because the angle of the sun results fewer shadows being cast on your subjects. This of course results in better pictures.

One final thought, photography is a great way to bond with your children and build their self-esteem. Taking pictures together creates memories that will last for a life time. Apply the tips from this article to make the most of your next picture taking adventure with your children.
