Picking Camera Lenses For Digital Cameras

By Mike Thompson

Many people love their Digital SLR cameras as the photo quality is on a whole other level. It just becomes a difficult question when deciding which lens to buy for your DSLR as the specifications are just a little too in depth. Here's a breakdown of all you need to know about how to buy lenses for your DSLR's.

First thing you must remember is most companies do not make lenses that are compatible with any other camera, like the Canon t3i bundle, than their own! So ensure that the lens you are buying is compatible with your specific camera!

There is a lot of technical jargon when it comes to purchasing a camera lens, so here's a quick walkthrough. Depending on what you want, like image quality or a high zooming ability, these are the things you should weigh against each other as this will be the main factor when it comes to buying the lens.

Lenses range in focal lengths and as such, there are lenses in the mid range or standard lengths being anywhere between 35mm to 80mm. This is actually equivalent to what the human eye can see.

A shorter focal length will result in having a wider field of view of your desired subject. This is referred to as a wide angle lens, since it has a relatively short focus, but it is a little different from the mid range lenses as some quality is lost.

If you have a clear idea of what you intend to use your camera for, you will be able to find lenses that are not just compatible with your camera, but are also compatible with your photography experience. The question, will you need to shoot objects that are extremely close or at a large distance away? If you intend to take far away shots, then perhaps a zooming lens is best for you. In other words, you need to find out what your needs are before choosing the lens.

Wide angle lenses are more costly than standard lenses, and some even cost as much, if not more, than the latest camera models. Nevertheless, the photo quality you can achieve from these is phenomenal as the pictures will be wide angle and show the obvious difference between standard and high quality lenses.

If you intend to take photos of portraits or environments with low illumination, you will need a smaller field of view to focus on. This means that the quality of your photos will be the best of the best and all you require is your photography skills to help achieve this.

With regards to buying such lenses, you can't go wrong with eBay or second hand electronics stores, online and offline. Make sure you keep your old lenses since if you happen to be compatible with your newer camera, this can save you a ton of money.
