The Vast Difference Found In Professional Photo Printing

By Daniel B. Wiedeman

First of all, what do we mean when we say "professional photo printing?" It's not anything you'll find at your average drugstore or megastore. It's an artisanal process performed by attentive, skilled experts who have been doing it for years. There's a gigantic difference between a mass-produced photo and one that has received individual attention. A good photograph deserves the finest treatment out there, and that is professional printing.

At professional photo printing houses, the employees pay attention to every part of the process. Let's imagine you've taken a really excellent picture. Which of these "printers" sounds like the best person for the job of printing it? A retail employee with zero training and almost no experience? Or a true photography lover who has been in the printing business for years? Doesn't that second option sound a whole lot better than the first?

The printers at professional photo printing houses are invested in the end product, and this makes a difference. Printers will strive hard to produce the best possible print of your favorite photographs.

Quality standards are much better at professional photo printing houses. The photography paper used there is of a better grade; it's thicker, heavier, and more durable. Additionally, they'll give you a pick of a gloss, semi-gloss, or matte finish. These are good options to have if you're planning on putting up a large print; paper prints need to be protected by glass, and this combined with a gloss finish can create reflections from a distance. Matte paper is a more practical choice.

There are other, more offbeat media also available at printing houses:

Metal photo prints - Tough against weather, dinging, scratching, and general wear and tear, this material is both gorgeous and easy to display. At many photo printing houses, you can choose between metallic and matte finishes.

Leather photo prints - New to many people, this interesting medium makes customizing leather pieces simple and fun. A wallet, a purse, a jacket, or any other small leather object can easily be made special. Leather prints are also fun to hang on the wall - the unique texture throws people for a loop.

Canvas photo prints - Canvas is perfect for large prints; its matte texture and strong, fibrous consistency make for non-reflective, durable prints. Canvas soaks up color rather than leaving it to sit on top, so your prints are unlikely to fade. The canvas texture also has the effect of making your print look more like a painting than a photo.
