If you want to become a professional photographer you don't need to attend a 4 year university to receive a degree. You can find technical colleges which offer photography as an elective where you can learn a great deal.
Can you still learn how to be a photographer being out of school for many years? The answer is yes. The only thing needed is your dedication to learn from the proper techniques and a camera to take some shots.
The nice thing about the Internet and technology is that you no longer even need to visit a campus in order to get an education. Distance education is offered by some institutions which allows you to learn from the comfort of your own home.
