What We Should Know About The Art Student

By Benjamin Loius

You may find it hard to believe, but when it comes to their craft, an art student means business. Just like medical students or business students, they are also not above spending effort, money and time in learning. They also have to attend years and years of formal (and even informal) classes to learn about art. They are also fully aware that they should put in as much practice of their craft so they can gain more than enough experience that will improve them as artists in the future. He is not really that much different from your typical student.

On the other hand, the art student is still markedly different. How are they different? People say he is different because, unlike others, he grew up with the creative gene, that he can make beauty out of nothing effortlessly. He may be gifted when it comes to colors, drawing, and painting. He could skillfully carve an amazing figure out of a shapeless slab of rock or a log. Even something so simple as clay could turn into something special in his hands. On the other hand, can you say that a med student has an innate talent or skill with the scalpel and incisions during surgery?

Some artists may be gifted enough to have a career even without formal training. But the artists recognize the importance of taking formal art education and training in making the grow, develop, and improve as better artists. If you want to make a career out of art or design, an art degree earned in art school will be an advantage.

What can an art student get out of going to art school, anyway? Aside from earning that art degree, the student will, first and foremost, learn. Aside from learning about art, in general, he can even look deeper into his chosen field of art works, from painting to sculpture. Veteran artists would be among the first to admit that there are still so many things that they do not know. Going to regular art classes will also instill discipline in the individual because they have to keep to a certain schedule and some guidelines. Guidelines will not hurt anybody despite what others say about it being quite limiting or restrictive.

This is also where he gets into contact with people who share the same interests with and could discuss art with. It is also the ideal place to find a mentor and critics who will give their assessments or reviews about his art. After all, the best critiques are those given by people who are knowledgeable about art.

One's potential and creativity will no doubt be given boosts if art is honed alongside people who share the same passion. Networking is also a good result of going to art school, and the more contacts they make early on, the more people they will know when they decide to take that major step in turning their passion for art into a career.

Unlike before, becoming an art student is no longer a seemingly unachievable feat. Budding artists can now have their pick among the many competent art programs being offered by various universities.
