Video Light: Creating Art And Drama In Your Photos

By Tanya Hanes

Lighting is the most important element in photography. In fact, the word photography means "drawing with light". It originated from the Greek words 'photos' (which means light) and 'graphe' (which means drawing). Without light you cannot produce any images with your camera, no matter how modern it is.

The two ideal times of the day to create dramatic photo shoots are during the morning and before sunset. However, you can create various effects for indoor, underwater, or nighttime photo shoots with the use of an artificial light. There are different types of lighting you can employ in photography to achieve the specific effect you want.

When Can You Use Video Lighting In Photography?

Weddings are one of the best occasions in which photography can be of great use. In creating a romantic feel for the couple's photos, a video light can be utilised. Unlike with flash, which can create a very strong and unflattering effect, video lighting is perfect for studio portraits. Whether you are conducting your photo session in a dim place or in a huge studio, you can always make use of a video light which offers wide range lighting.

Artificial lighting is needed in taking photographs underwater, too, especially if you're a few metres beneath the ocean surface. In order to capture the true colours of marine life like fishes, crustaceans and corals, you need a good lighting equipment to illuminate the surroundings.

Creating Various Photography Techniques With Lighting

Video lights are innately strong, but the good thing with this equipment is that the effect can be adjusted. You can place a gel in front of an LED video light to create a warm or tungsten effect. LED video lights are also equipped with a diffuser to produce a soft effect on your photographs. Moreover, you can use it along with other lighting equipment such as speed lights and flashguns to employ certain photography techniques.

You can further explore the various lighting effects of video lights by placing it in various areas. For example, you can create flare by placing the light behind the subject and moving to a position where the edge of light appears slightly at the back of the subject.
