If you are looking to boost your company's image, use a professional

By David Slater

If you are planning on using photography in your promotional campaigns, it is always a much better idea to get a professional photographer to photograph them for you. It can seem like a real stroke of luck if someone you know can do the pictures for you for hardly any cost. After all, with camera equipment as competent as they are these days, it can seem that taking photographs is largely a process of point and shoot.

However, a professional photographer is much more than just their kit. They will have worked on a wide variety of jobs and bring that knowledge to your table. Many of them will have had years of experience and will comprehend the craft of lighting and composition. They will know the risks and be able to give some advice on your requirements. They will also have a portfolio or a website that you can check out to see that they are suitable.

Whilst your friend might be able to take splendid photographs in his field of interest, it is unlikely that he has the breadth of experience to cope with all the variables of a corporate shoot. You will need to have photographs that portray you and your business off in the best possible light. If your attitude to the final edit is " These are OK, they'll do" then they are not likely to be very eye-catching for your customers. And if the pictures look poor, what will it say about you?

Professionals are also able to prepare your images for your exact requirements, whether they are digital or for print. File sizes and formats can be complicated and the free picture management software doesn't always have what is required - particularly the option to put on proper captions.

Also, if you are aiming to get your pictures into the trade magazines, a professional photographer is likely to have direct access to the relevant titles and be familiar with their technical requirements. A journalist is more likely to check out photos that are coming from someone they know to be a proper photographer, rather than from someone who works for the company and did them himself.

If you have a particular destinantion in mind, contact them and ask if they can recommend a photographer. Invariably the cost is always an issue when planning these kind of ideas but, if you are going to invest money in promotion, it is well worth getting the best images you possibly can. And whilst your friend might look to be a good investment, if it all goes wrong you might have to get a professional in to retrieve the situation.
