Finding The Right Arabic Dancing Instructor

By Kathy Kaufman

Belly dancing is a traditional and well known form of Arabic dancing. It is popular in many different countries. Belly dancing classes can easily be found in many areas because there are many people who teach this style of dance. These instructors teach beginners as well as more advanced students looking to perfect their techniques.

Belly dancing is a fun activity and a beautiful form of art. It teaches balance, coordination and proper posture. It is also an excellent exercise activity for staying fit and has the ability to significantly increase a person's self esteem. The beauty of this dance is in the fluid motion and intriguing interpretations by individual dancers.

The process of locating an instructor should not be difficult. If you pay attention, you will probably notice ads in your local newspaper or flyers hung all over town. Most fitness centers offer these classes, as do most community recreation centers as well.

The cost of these classes is fairly inexpensive. There is usually a per class charge, so you won't have to pay for classes you are unable to attend. Occasionally, some instructors will ask for a set payment upfront, but that usually covers a predetermined number of classes. When this is the type of payment arrangement, you typically won't count classes you are absent from. If your fee covers the cost of 10 classes, you won't have any money due again until you have actually attended 10 separate classes.

You can probably find listings for local dance teachers online as well. Most instructors actually own their own studios so they are offering sign ups for a variety of different classes. You will probably find websites and business pages on social networking sites that make obtaining information easy. Most sizable studios should offer belly dancing classes, since it is among the most popular choices that people want to learn.

Alternatively, you could try ask your family and friends. Maybe some of them have taken classes before and could provide you contact information for their former instructor. This gives you an opportunity to ask them questions about what their experience was like and how much they had to spend. First hand accounts are a great way to determine if a specific studio or instructor would be right for you.

Once you've signed up for classes, your teacher will let you know if their is anything specific you need to bring when you attend and how often classes will be held. Class size can be very different among instructors. Some like to keep the number of students small so that it is easier to provide personalized help, but others like larger classes where students can provide help to each other. Large classes usually have students who are on different levels of learning. Those that have taken classes longer will be there to help the newer students learn difficult techniques and provide their own insight.

Some of the common elements taught in Arabic dancing classes are the basic techniques, they types of music that is used and information about more advanced techniques as well. You will learn much more than the moves associated with the style. You will also discuss cultural influences and the history of the art form.
